Reykjavik Winter Lights Festival
The Reykjavik Winter Lights Festival will be held on February 6-15. It’s not too late to find cheap flights to Reykjavik and celebrate this highlight on Reykjavik’s festival calendar. Last year’s Winter Lights attracted over 40,000 guests with 220 registered events taking place throughout the city of Reykjavik.
The Winter Lights Festival was first held in 2002 and has now become a ten day celebration where primary importance is placed on light art installations while highlighting the dramatic contrasts between darkness and light experienced in Iceland, putting to good use Iceland’s abundance of clean, green energy. The festival shines a light on Icelandic nature, art, artistic expression, education, sports and entertainment and is not limited to the city centre.
Some of the highlights of the Winter Lights Festival include Museum Night on February 7 when museums across Reykjavik stay open and free of charge until midnight and invite guests to enjoy a program of captivating an unusual events. The International Children’s Day on February 8 is hosted at Gerduberg Museum in Breidholt and welcomes children and families to participate in a number of engaging activities ranging from workshops in sound technology to the creations of shadow theatres and sky lanterns. One of the more popular features of Winter Lights Festival is Pool Night on February 15 when guests are invited to experience some of Reykjavik’s unique pool experience free of charge from 8 pm until midnight, with the added attraction of thrilling in-pool activities, music and pool illuminations.

The biggest event of any Winter Lights Festival is the opening night when Reykjavik centre comes alive with lights and people of course. This year’s annual Reykjavík Winter Lights Festival will feature a number of sensational works of light art. These highly anticipated art commissions, which will also be exhibited in both Torshavn and Manchester, include pieces by: Tine Bech (Denmark), Inuk Silis Høegh (Greenland), Arild M. Kalseth (Norway), Amelie Deschamps (France), and Kitty Von-Sometime (UK) among others.
